About the reindeer names...
It has surprised us that so many people have commented on the
reindeer names on our plaque over the years. Seems, even the actual authorship of
the old poem is questionable. Some say Clement C. Moore, Others say Major Henry Livingston, Jr.
Excerpt from Wikipedia - (In An American Anthology, 1787–1900, editor Edmund Clarence
Stedman reprinted the Moore version of the poem, including the spelling of
"Donder and Blitzen" he adopted, rather than the earlier Dutch version from 1823,
"Dunder and Blixem." Both phrases translate as "Thunder and Lightning" in English,
though the German word for thunder is "Donner", and the words in modern
Dutch would be "Donder en Bliksem.")
However, an image of a handwritten page generally attributed to Clement C. Moore,
available courtesy of the New York Historical Society, for viewing online at Wikipedia,
clearly shows the name, Donder.
So... after seeing the handwritten page from the New York Historical Society, we settled on Donder.
